Hālau o Waipiʻo Cultural Immersion Camps

Hālau o Waipiʻo is located on 8 acres of taro patch land at Mokuwai in lush Waipiʻo Valley.  Accessible only by 4-wheel drive, Waipiʻo is a true cultural kīpuka, where native Hawaiian practices including taro cultivation have been practiced continuously for thousands of years.

Hālau o Waipiʻo provides cultural immersion experiences to learners ranging from infants to elders, through a variety of residential programs which introduce participants to a traditional lifestyle grounded in mālama and aloha ‘āina.

Hālau o Waipiʻo’s primary use is as an outdoor learning laboratory for students of Kanu o ka ‘āina’s Waipiʻo Project who spend every other week in historic Waipiʻo Valley.  For the past five years, these students have taken part in a historic water study measuring the impact of a 100% stream restoration on native fauna and flora.  Students also have created and maintain a native Hawaiian horticultural complex, growing their own food, medicines, dyes and other necessities.
